Take It Inside: Fall and Winter Gardening

You may miss the sun’s warmth on your face when Fall’s cool weather arrives, but there’s no reason you’ve got to put your gardening gloves away as the seasons change. Put your hands to use and take your gardening activities indoors.

planters

Have you tried your hand at forcing bulbs? An easy process, winter and spring flowering bulbs like amaryllis, paperwhite narcissus, and hyacinths can brighten living spaces when the view outdoors is dreary and brown.

Shallow pots work very well, but pots of varying depths can be used; you’ll simply need a little more filler. Add enough pebbles or gravel to hold the bulbs in place. (If it’s a deeper pot, you can even fill it in with bubble wrap and then place your stones on top!) You don’t want to cover them, but do load up your vessel with bulbs – think about the payoff of a myriad of blooms!

Once your bulbs are in place, add enough water to reach the base of the bulbs, just shy of touching them. Put your planter in a sunny spot, and watch how quickly roots will take – that will usually happen in just a day or two. In another month’s time, you’ll have gorgeous blooms bursting forth!

If you’re lucky enough to live in a warm climate where tropicals thrive, but need to bring your plants inside once the temperature dips, you can show off larger specimens in statement planters. And we’ve got some great ones! These vessels look as great with twigs and branches in them as they do with live plants.

And don’t forget some other basic necessities if you’re going to keep the dirt off you and off your floors, and things that help keep your planting area organized.

Recipe File: Height of Summer BLTs with Roasted Poblano Aioli

The best parties always leave the host time to mingle with their guests and RELAX. If you’re the host, all the more reason to try to stick to that rule!

set the table for your Summer Party

For your next summer shindig, come up with a menu that lets your guests build their own dinner. Setting up stations where your friends and family can tailor their meal to their tastes is key. Pretty glasses and lemonade with some sliced strawberries and a few spirits mean the grownups can make a cocktail that’s theirs alone. Kids (let’s be honest, not only the kids) will love scooping their own ice cream for dessert, adding some sprinkles and syrups on top.

But the star of your meal – especially if you have at the ready these summery plates– will be the BLTs. Not just any BLTs, mind you. These have an added oomph that will bring smiles all around. This easy to make Roasted Poblano Aioli might just make the best BLT you’ve ever had.

BLT prep

It all takes just a little prep work, nothing too arduous. It is summer, after all. Roast the poblanos, cook the bacon, slice and toast the bread. Slice up those delicious tomatoes – sort of medium thickness – and wash the lettuce. You’re practically done! The aioli comes together quickly in a food processor.

After the party, if there’s any left, the poblano aioli can be served alongside grilled pork chops, stirred into corn and tortilla soup, dolloped over your morning sunny-side up eggs. IF there’s any left.

Happy summer!

Good crusty bread
Best tomatoes you can find, either heirloom or even better, home-grown
Bibb or romaine lettuce
Thick cut bacon
Salt and pepper

for the aioli:
2 egg yolks
1 clove garlic
¼ bunch parsley
1 TB lime juice
3 poblano peppers, roasted on the grill or under the broiler, then peeled, seeded, and chopped
Salt
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil

Combine and purée the egg yolks, garlic, and parsley in a food processor. Add the lime juice, roasted poblanos, and salt to taste. With the motor running, slowly drizzle in the olive oil, gradually adding more until it’s the consistency of mayonnaise. Check and adjust seasoning.

Behind the Scenes: Home Décor, 2017 Vol. 2

Shooting photos for our catalogs takes many, many hours – weeks, even – but the best days are the ones where the shoot involves a road trip. For the Havana and Waterside collections this season, our “studio” was on the coast near Gearhart, Oregon.

Setup for the each of the shots actually takes a bit of time. What might look like a scene you’ve just happened upon while strolling on the beach more often than not has been arranged and rearranged, with the art director stepping back to peruse and consider, which then means more rearranging…

But along the way, amidst all the hard work and long hours, there’s always a little play time.

We think our catalogs look better than ever! With more than 800 new items in this season’s Home Decor and Flaire catalogs, we hope you enjoy thumbing through them and shopping for new items as much as we did sourcing and shooting our new products.

Creative Recipes / Watermelon Mint Salad

We like our salads filled with honey and fruit!  Not to mention yummy feta cheese. Don’t worry, we added fresh mint for to keep things green. These seasonal ingredients come together so wonderfully that there is hardly a dressing, just a simple drizzle of honey. You can pick up all of these ingredients at your local farmers market. All four of them! This recipe is about quality over quantity.  Smell and knock on watermelons (or whatever your system is) until you find the perfect one, get fresh local honey, spend a little more on the good feta, and find the mintiest mint. After that, the rest is easy!

How do you votive?

The beauty of so many of our products is that they are open to interpretation. We will develop a piece of home décor and style it one way for our catalog photo shoot. Then our merchandising team puts their spin on things and displays it another way in our showroom. After that, all sorts of unique and amazing independent retailers integrate the item into their curated collection of goods. Finally, the individuals who purchase the item welcome it into their home to beautify their space in whatever way they see fit. One person’s fresh egg holder might be another person’s quirky earring tray. One person might see a perfect cheese spread while someone else will envision a display of succulents.

Creative Ideas for uses of votive holders!

In this post we take one item and show it three different ways. We would love to hear your ideas of how you would use this votive holder! Tell us what you think below.
